Eggs missing or still in the nest, covered by nesting material?

The swans in our local park laid 9 eggs; a few days later they were all gone. The swans still continue to sit on the nest. My question is are the eggs still in the nest, is it usual for the swans to cover the egg with nesting material whilst incubating them.
Thanks Bob.
