Unless you are at hatching and at the swan's death, there is no real way of knowing the exact age of a swan.
However, because you state that it does not have the vibrant orange/red beak and it is alone, would indicate that it is under one year of age. At one year old, the swan's beak will turn the full reddish/orange color and the feathers will be completely white. More than likely, the parents have chased it from their habitat to begin the new nesting period which will begin in the spring after migration. So, your new swan is looking for a new habitat and will also eventually look for a lifetime mate. Until then, Enjoy! The Regal Swan
